FIRE Expert Group Meeting Jan 2009

Date: January 8-9, 2009, from 11 o'clock on 8th till 16 o'clock on 9th

Venue: European Commission, Avenue de Beaulieu 33, Brussels, room 0/54  NOTE: changed address!

Co-organised by
the Directorate General for Information Society and Media of the European Commission and the undefinedFIREWorks project.

Context and objectives
Two years ago FIRE unit was established. Half a year ago the first wave of FIRE projects under FP7 were launched. The objective of the meeting is to analyse the current status of the FIRE initiative and then to revisit and update the FIRE strategy prior to the next Call for proposals for ICT Objective1.6, which is planned to open in June 2009.

During the Expert Group meeting we will discuss (potentially in parallel sessions) the current status of the FIRE initiative, on the basis of the above background material, so to identify common areas and open issues. The goal will be to define effective means to increase cooperation and synergies between FIRE projects, based on a comparative analysis of their fields of work and of their methodologies (with particular reference to the experimentally-driven long-term research approach characteristic of the FIRE initiative). The analysis should also extend to identify possible synergies with other ICT projects and national initiatives wherever feasible.

The Group will also start to work towards the identification of a revised FIRE strategy along its two interconnected dimensions (FIRE Facility and FIRE research). A group of editors will prepare a draft Expert Group Report for comments by the group.

In March/April, the public will be invited for comments. The report will be presented and discussed at the next Future Internet Assembly in Prague. Another Expert Group Meeting takes place as well around that time.

The final report will be published by the end of June.
