FIREworks Strategy Workshop

Date: September 11, 2008, at 9:30 -  18:00

Venue: Les Cordeliers, UPMC Paris Universitas, Institut des Cordeliers, 15 rue de l'Ecole de Médecine, 75006 Paris

In the beginning of 2007 Commission services at DG Information Society and Media, unit F4, launched FIRE Expert Group to provide vision and strategic insight for the ICT Call description. This strategy work of the FIRE Expert Group will be continued and organised bi-annually by FIREworks. Relevant reports, input for Framework Programme updates and other statements needed will be extracted from the highly-noted experts of the field.

On September 11, 2008 FIREworks facilitates the FIREworks Strategy workshop (invited presentations) in order to brainstorm the relevant topics and approaches for the input for the revised FIRE report  which the FIRE Expert Group will further work on. The workshop will be organized in streams which are as follows:

  1. Resource description: The cornerstone of federation
    • Testbed data / resource representation
    • Test resource (administrative domain) naming and addressing
    • XML
  2. SLAs, quality assurance of testing activities
  3. Monitoring and virtualising challenges in the federation
  4. Next Generation Network - a challenge for future testbeds
    • Governance aspects
    • Incentives for resource sharing
    • High-speed scheduling
    • Admission control
  5. Requirements for the European Experimental Facility
    • What type of experimental support is needed in the future
    • Openness of the testbed – offering and access - how this should be implemented?

We have asked for participants' undefinedstatement in the chosen topic from the above, or to propose another one relevant to the metrics of the testbeds, and moreover, to the harmonisation process of the European testbed field. This short statement can be in a text form, or narrated presentation. We will collect these statements (via email by 15 August 2008) to the workshop-dedicated web-site to be viewed prior to the event and laying basis for the discussion carried out in the workshop. Based on the interest shown to the different topics we will plan the progress of the Strategy day and share the tasks among participants. The outcome of the FIRE Strategy Workshop is the brainstorming results on ‘How to federate?’

Workshop facilitated by Paolo Martinez (FUTOUR IDEAI, Florence and Barcelona).
