Future Internet Research and Experimentation

Today the world ticks at the pace of internet. Internet is in the core of major part of all activities and its role in our life is only growing. Functionality is more and more about connectivity.

What will the future internet/internets be like? The challenges are yet to be fully understood, but the internet needs to evolve, it perhaps needs to be torn apart into smaller pieces and then re-built again. There is no research on networks, or on services without experimentation.

FIREworks brings together various explorers and players of the future internet. The project facilitates and develops a forum for stakeholders in Europe and beyond to work for the future internet research involving large-scale experimentation, and for common premises required for this research. The European approach to boost research is to connect and federate experimental resources, enable joint research, and increase the use of existing facilities for even competing design prospects of the future internet architecture and technologies.

FIREworks SA (Support Action) is to coordinate and support interworking of testbeds activities in Europe and their respective connections outside of Europe, mainly to North America and Far East. FIREworks has two objectives: FIRE Community, FIREworks creates a sustainable forum for testbed actors in the area of future networks and services and FIRE Strategy will be developed and actively driven in all relevant fora.

Fireworks promoting experimentally-driven long-term, visionary research on new paradigms and networking concepts and architectures for the future internet. Fireworks builds a large-scale experimentation facility to support both medium and long-term research on networks and services by gradually federating existing and new testbeds for emerging or future internet technologies.

The outcome of FIREworks in these challenges is to deliver required information between stakeholders, and in specific, between projects about the needs, prerequisites and criteria for experimentally driven research, and a roadmap for a European large-scale experimentation facility. FIREworks charts a map of testbed activities in Europe and studies their conditions for federation, acquiring understanding on the depth of possible and reasonable federation in the rich and diversified field of testing activities on new paradigms and networking concepts and architectures for the future internet.

The ultimate objective of FIREworks SA is to ensure both tighter collaboration of testbeds with the aim to improve overall testing features and provision of a higher number of testing services in Europe.
